"The inspiration of this book about European professional and amateur women pilots came to me when I realised the ignorance that exists about aviation and particularly feminine aviation. Most people are quite in the dark regarding women s flying achievements, not only in the pioneering age, when a pilot needed the sixth sense of an "old sea-dog" to fly, because planes were not safely like those of today, and modern control had still to be invented, but today as well.
This book does not claim to be historical and encyclopaedical. Many names and events will be forgotten, because not one of us has the time to research and record them. The important thing it to give as accurate an account as possible of what has been achieved little by little through efforts, study and tenacity, despite having to battle against the resentiment, egotism and self-importance of backward-thinking mentalities" (Florenza de Bernardi)
